Comedy: In praise of eccentricity

In praise of eccentricity

August is a time of unusual treats. Case in point is the under-the-radar arrival of Griff Rhys Jones with this work-in-progress.

After a decades-long career in comedy – much of it with his much missed comedy partner Mel Smith, the anniversary of whose death was marked last week – Jones has collected some mighty tales.

Mixing stories with prized anecdotes and musings, some half-remembered, as well as previously unseen footage, this a rare chance to see this comedy touchstone live. With a back catalogue that saw him start with ‘Not The Nine O’Clock News’, through ‘Morons From Outer Space’, and – of course ‘Smith & Jones’, this is a comedy history lesson to be savoured by any comedy fan.

A treat of a different colour – the variety night Broken Biscuits is coming to Brighton for the first time, mixing comedy, with music, spoken word, and animation. Plus a live electro-swing DJ set, for good measure. Perfect to widen your horizons.

Griff Rhys Jones – Work In Progress, Tuesday 23 August, Komedia, 8pm, £12
Broken Biscuits, Sunday 21 August, Komedia, 7.30pm, £8/5
