BREMF – The Science of Music : The Music of Nature
Dr Flora Dennis and Professor Ed Hughes of Sussex University headed a fascinating programme that considered: the development of musical notation; musical clocks; tuning and temperaments; natural trumpets; and the history of the oboe. This potpourri of talks by experts Malcolm Rose, Sabine Klaus and Richard Earle was enhanced with music from Mary-Jannet Leith (recorder), Tom Allery (harpsichord), trumpeters Gareth Hoddinott and Katie Hodges, violinist Julia Bishop and Festival Co-Director Clare Norburn (soprano). Her colleague, Deborah Roberts, explained her ambitious ‘Gaia’ project.
This free introductory event will easily equal anything in the main festival for musicality, scholarship and sheer delight.
