Celebcity: One to watch…
Josh Dillon only started doing stand-up comedy three years ago, but has certainly been making his mark on the comedy scene with his dark, deadpan humour. I’ve gigged with the Brighton local quite a lot on the circuit and recently I thought I’d find out more about Josh’s career and how he got into comedy.
What made you start doing stand-up comedy?
Well, I wanted to be a comedian when I was 18 or 19, but it didn’t happen. Then years later I had a drunken rant one night to my wife, saying I wish I’d been a comedian. So my wife surprised me by booking me on a comedy course in Brighton. I tried to get out of it and said I wasn’t being serious, but I loved it and realised I should have done it years ago!
I struggle to write jokes that aren’t dark
What are your stand up highlights of 2016?
Performing at Brighton Fringe this year. I did a show with Cally Beaton and it was a sellout so that was fantastic. Also I loved playing the Komedia. That’s a great venue.
You describe your style of comedy as dark and deadpan. who influenced you?
I adored Jack Dee, but I think my style is darker than his. I’m not sure where the darkness comes from. I struggle to write jokes that aren’t dark. I don’t know what’s wrong with me! Maybe it’s growing up on council estates and having been a probation officer for 15 years!
