Entertainment – Joe Fuller: The Football Ramble Live: eloquent conversation and non-evil banter
I’m a big fan of podcasts, and would heartily recommend shows such as The Russell Brand Show (6 Music era innocence in particular), Professor Blastoff, Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review and International Waters. The Football Ramble is a little more niche, chiefly concerning football and all, but it’s worth a listen for anyone who might think football commentary is just for the shouty or misogynist types.
The Football Ramble is Marcus Speller, Jim Campbell, Luke Moore and Pete Donaldson, who release their main weekly show every Tuesday, as well as a shorter Premier League preview show. Although the main show heavily focuses on the Premier League, it is notable for also discussing the wider football world in general. It can be a nice way to hear about football news in fact, through the prism of four knowledgeable and funny presenters.
Football commentary isn’t just for the shouty or the misogynist
I don’t know what the Ramblers’ views are on the term banter but the word is tainted now, by the type of scoundrels who use it as an excuse for derogatory comments. The Ramblers’ teasing of each other’s views and team loyalties feels friendly however, and their reactions to news stories reflective rather than reactionary.
The live show should be good fun if it can recreate half of the jovial atmosphere of the podcast, and there will be a chance to purchase a signed copy of their new book for a discounted price with your ticket too.
The Football Ramble Live, The Old Market, Wed 2 November, 7.30pm, £15/£27 (ticket & book)
