BREMF – Guts and Glory – Spiritato!

Spirtato! is an orchestra living dangerously. Gut strings and natural trumpets are prone to cruel tuning problems and it’s a mystery how the chamber organ was tempered. However, bravura musicianship, with Baroque ornamentations and heroic stance, pulled them through brilliantly. They clearly relished the risks and we enjoyed a very exciting programme. The trumpets and timpani naturally got the pulse racing (in a very good way) but the strings too, led by the amazing Kinga Ujszászi (violin), were pumping adrenalin in Biber’s scintillating Rosary Sonata ‘Annunciation’ and ‘Battalia’, which mimics the weird sounds of battle, including cannon and musket shots!
