Marissa Nadler’s ‘Bury Your Name’ home recordings album released in September is a quiet delight, with multilayered vocals and a gorgeous Julee Cruise-type haze about it. The Brighton gig should be a similarly intimate and moving affair, worth checking out for any singer-songwriter fans.
The Haunt, 9 December, 7pm

A chance to see something truly new: a debut gig focusing on Icelandic music and electronic improvisation. ALDA Orchestra features professional musicians specialising in contemporary classical Nordic music. Cool.

I went to Brighton Festival Chorus’ Christmas Concert a few years ago and it was a really fun, communal way to get in the festive spirit. Soloists, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Youth Choir will present carols and generally superb classical music.
Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, 11 December, 4pm

It’s a star-spangled fundraiser of a comedy night in aid of Survivors’ Network and Rise this week, with Charity Chuckle’s Christmas feast sporting Bridget Christie, Jo Neary, Laura Lexx, Sajeela Kershi, Julie Jepson, Harriet Braine, Athena Kuglenu and MC Jen Brister. Awe-some.
Komedia, 8pm, Wed 7 December, £17.50

Twice the fun this Thursday as a double bill of solo shows come to town – with the price of only one! Fin Taylor brings his Edinburgh hit on white privilege – noticeably titled ‘Whitey McWhiteface’ – and is joined by Mat Ewins and his comic seminar on how to make it in the movies.
Komedia, Thurs 8 December, 7.30pm, £10

It’s the last Christmas AOH weekend, so fill your stockings with unique creations. There’s no better starting point than the popular Trojan House where beautiful work by Troy Ohlson and friends can be enjoyed with mulled wine.

Elsewhere on the trail, another warm welcome awaits at City Retreat. Here local favourite Val Fawbert captures the spirit of Brighton and Hove in contemporary palette knife impressions on canvas. Also open Friday 6-9pm when the walled garden is floodlit.
