Brighton Lights – What to do in the city: w/c 17th January
Music & Entertainment with Joe Fuller
1 Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival’s shows are always a joyous, sheer musical force, and this gig features a new trio of Olie Brice (double bass), Rachel Musson (tenor sax) & Mark Sanders (drums). Support comes from two local acts: In Threads (described as “short bursts of concentrated enjoyment”) and The Fey Din (a mix of percussion, symbolism, vox, guitar, loops & more). It will be experimental but could well be beautiful too.
The Verdict, 19 Jan, 8pm, £8
2 The Lewes Psych Festival might be sold out but there are still tickets available for this brilliant pre-party. Fumaça Preta are a fun, raucous, spikily rhythmic band with a strong debut album you should check out. Melt Dunes, Is Bliss, Projector, Rokurokubi will also play on a generous bill.
Lewes Con Club, 20 Jan, 7pm, £10
3 Zumba instructor Matthew Blacklock wants to send in the clowns to entertain children living in crisis. To help raise funds for Clowns Without Borders UK, you can attend a special event to dance with the best Zumba instructors in town and also meet the clowns. Plus you’re welcome to dress in a comic outfit so it will be colourful.
The Old Market, 22 Jan, 10am, £8
4 Martha Wainwright is a fantastic singer songwriter, and her new album Goodnight City reminds me of Emmylou Harris’ sublime Wrecking Ball album, so this intimate gig should be a delicate delight.
Komedia, 23 Jan, 7.30pm, £22
Comedy with Victoria Nangle
5 Great original ideas come to the fore with this double bill of critically acclaimed solo shows. Douglas Walker: Komischer is an engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking one-man sketch show, with Daniel Nils Roberts: The Causeway offering an hour’s historical lecture with a twist.

Arts with Brighton’s Arty
7 We’ve long admired the creative life-force that is Richard Denne – constantly experimenting and innovating as he fuses traditional printing techniques with digital artwork. And now he’s diversified into designing a quirky range of T-shirts with typically witty and stylish graphics. So get your hands on ‘Splash’ – new for 2017 at the BigBadBrightonBear shop at etsy.com.
8 The Chalkies are having a studio sale. So there’s never been a better time to take on the Lewes one-way system and enjoy the warm welcome that awaits at this much-loved artist-run collective. Look forward to beautiful art at affordable prices showcasing a variety of media, styles, subjects and techniques. Until 29 January, chalkgallerylewes.co.uk.
