The Unfilmables
The concept of The Unfilmables is an intriguing one – writing scores to films that don’t exist. The first, ‘The Passenger’, hits hard with a thumping, Terminator-tinged score from Wrangler and crazed sci-fi visuals that pitch somewhere between video art and those graphics they have projected on screens in cool clubs. However, ten minutes in the novelty begins to wear off, and by the end the repetition of images again and again begins to jar.
The second film, ‘The Colour of Chips’ takes a surreal trip through Blackpool. A sample-heavy soundtrack from Mica Levi is fun but again the film quickly begins to drag. Overall there were many interesting ideas but with just two commissions, there just wasn’t enough to hold you throughout. Shorter films, or perhaps many short films, could have helped follow through on the initial promise.
