Glyndebourne’s Jerwood Young Artists

Matthew Fletcher made a very welcome return to accompany this year’s Jerwood Young Artists. Soprano Sarah-Jane Lewis was at her best in the softer moments of Mozart and Fauré. There were signs of effort in Ponchielli’s ‘Suicidio’. John Findon’s thrilling tenor gave us beautifully characterised tragedy with Bizet’s Don José and Britten’s Tom Bowling and then delighted with comedic Britten and highly romantic Lehár, recalling Mario Lanza or Wunderlich.

Baritone James Newby too had me laughing and in tears with Mozart’s clownish Papageno, ardent and poetic Schubert, sublime Korngold and blissfully camp Cole Porter. Full-length solo programmes next year please!
