Stage: In The Dark: Exciting events in unusual places at the Theatre Royal Brighton

From the beginning of August the Theatre Royal closes for maintenance for 2 weeks, but although the main stage is ‘dark’ there’s plenty going on elsewhere.

Originally created in order to utilise the building during an unexpected dark period, Out of Hours events and workshops have become an established part of Theatre Royal Brighton’s programme, offering new, small scale performances, experiences and participatory activities held outside normal performance times in areas of the building not generally accessible to the public.

There’s a sense of excitement from the moment you arrive at the Stage Door for an Out of Hours event. From start to finish the customer’s experience is special with magical lighting, beautiful pop up bars in unusual places and access to the hidden corners of the building including under stage, dressing rooms, and the Last Gulp actors bar, showing off the unique history and heritage of the building.

This year the Out of Hours season has some fantastic experiences for children and families including Blue, a tiny delight of music, puppetry and invention performed deep beneath the stage for audiences of 15 at a time; exciting creative workshops, led by artist Abi Horn, where children can make sun prints, rainbow catchers, fairy lanterns and paper cut pictures to add to our Enchanted Forests installation, turning the outside of the Theatre into a woody fairy tale trail; and a magical parade to a hidden spot for a Twilight Picnic.

A sense of excitement from the moment you arrive

Adults can enjoy Torchlight Tours of the Theatre at night; the eerie and atmospheric Victorian magic of Miller & Brooks in Gaslight Tales; create a mini Puppet Idol with puppeteer Fran Malone; and leave with a bitter taste in their mouth after The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney, a macabre, puppet told tale of Victorian intrigue, obsession, murder and confectionery!

A series of exciting and fascinating events for the young and not so young, and an ideal diversion for families this summer holiday.

Torchlight Tours, Gaslight Tales, Blue, Enchanted Forests, Twilight Picnic, Puppet Idols, and The Sorrowful Tale of Sleeping Sidney are running from 3rd to 10th August at various times. Visit www.atgtickets.com/brighton for more information
