BREMF – Pygmalion

Imagine brightly-coloured French porcelain, animated with music. Josh Cooter, a perfectly anguished tenor, sings the self-deluding lover with gorgeously honeyed tones. He is briefly scolded by feisty soprano Roberta Diamond until, with Love’s help, he falls for his ‘creation’ Angela Hicks, a very pure-sounding Baroque soprano. Satoko Doi-Luck’s excellent Ensemble Molière revels in her skilful arrangement of Rameau’s pretty operette, bringing out all the musical wit that is echoed in Kate Anderson’s enchanting backgrounds and animations, projected over the singers with terse and amusing translations of the text. It’s so easy to follow and a joyful hour of rococo elegance.
