Simply the best, i360 better than all the rest
The i360 has won not one, but two national awards.
The 2017 Structural Awards, held in London, celebrate the best in global engineering.
Brighton’s popular attraction won two awards. The i360 won both the supreme award for structural excellence and the award for tall or slender structure.
Martin Powell, Chief Executive of The Institution of Structural Engineers said: “When you think you’ve seen it all, another year of exemplary entries are received elevating structural engineering, yet again, to another level.
“We have witnessed some breath-taking projects at this year’s awards, featuring ingenious use of materials and new construction methods to create buildings, bridges and landmarks that inspire.”
Winners were chosen from a shortlist of 45 pioneering global projects, each a feat of structural engineering and a demonstration of the talent of the engineers behind them.
Each of the 14 categories recognised the diverse range of structures. Recognising the engineering talent displayed in temples to bridges to tourist attractions.
The supreme award for structural engineering excellence celebrates the year’s finest example of structural engineering design.
The judging panel, made up of a distinguished group of industry experts, unanimously agreed that the i360 was a “remarkable feat of engineering.”
They praised engineers Jacobs for its use of purpose-designed cladding and “sloshing liquid dampers”, allowing the slenderness of the finished structure.
The tower was constructed without the use of cranes, instead using a “top down” method. This ensured that all construction happened safely at ground level.
