Urgent plea to help Tonka the dog

The owners of French mastiff Tonka are appealing for help to pay for a much needed operation.

The French mastiff was left tied to a rotten bench outside an animal rescue centre in Kent before being taken in by owner Rick Howard-Pay.

Tonka urgently needs an operation on his knee. The ‘gentle giant’  has a cruciate problem and requires a tricky procedure called a tribial plateau levelling osteotomy, which is further complicated by his size.  At ten and a half stone Tonka is not easy to operate on.

Mr Howard-Pay’s insurance can only cover £500 of the £3,600 needed for the surgery on his dog’s back leg.

Local vets are unable to operate but Rick has found a specialist who can carry out the much needed operation on December 22nd. A fundraising page has been set up in the hope of raising enough for the procedure.

Tonka’s owner said: “We are really desperate. We have insurance but we stupidly didn’t read it fully when we took it out as it only covers a tiny part of a procedure that costs around £3,600.”
