Former Labour MP honours Brighton & Hove’s first Mayor

The first Mayor of Brighton and Hove Betty Walshe has died aged 89 and her funeral will take place tomorrow.

Her death followed an admission to the Royal Sussex County Hospital on Christmas Eve for a chest infection.

She died three days later. Ms Walshe took office as Mayor in 1997 having previously been Chair of the Shadow Unitary Authority of Brighton and Hove in 1996.

Political figures in Brighton and Hove have paid tribute to the highly regarded former Councillor.

And we spoke with Ivor Caplin, former Labour MP for Hove, about her career and legacy.
