To coincide with International Women’s Day 2018 on 8 March, The Old Market has curated a mini- season of shows and events to celebrate women in all their glory. The mini-season runs through March and into April and is a celebration full of formidable female figures in all their heterogeneity.

TOM’s Film Club presents Girlhood, one of the best coming-of-age films of recent years. Girlhood is a knockout contribution to the canon of French cinema, painting an intimate portrait of the life and struggles of protagonist Marieme. Gritty and uplifting in equal measure, Girlhood traces the difficult terrain facing a young black girl growing up in the projects.

Ageing is one of the key themes of the Reigning Women season. Many of the experiences facing women that are intimately tied up with getting older are often concealed and ignored, never taking center stage in explorations within mainstream arts. Ageing shouldn’t mean retreating into the background of social life. The Women Over 50 Film Festival (WOFFF) celebrates older women on screen and behind the camera with an annual short film festival and regular screenings and events in and around Brighton and Hove.

WOFFF are screening a selection of the best films that the 2017 WOFFF has to offer.

Chortle award nominee and rising star in stand-up, Kiri Pritchard-Mclean thinks the world revolves around her, but that didn’t stop her wishing to mentor vulnerable kids. Consequently, she’s going to be extremely careful what she wishes for in the future, this is an immoral comedian’s morality tale about other people lacking morals. Two parts hilarity and one part philosophy and raises some interesting food for thought.

A&E comedy bring their critically acclaimed and award-winning social satire Enter The Dragons to the stage with a show that gives ageing a right ol’ kick up the arse. Winner of Best of the Brighton Fringe 2017’ Enter the Dragons comes from a place of frustration and returns fire with an irreverent, and at times absurd, show that pokes fun at the challenges facing women as they age.

A celebration full of formidable female figures in all their heterogeneity

“We’re fed up with negative, caricatured portrayals of older women, and are giving a rallying cry of joyful dissent to all women. We hope that the show speaks to anyone who is considering ageing! There’s a common misconception that as you get older you are doomed to life of hot flushes, swollen ankles and cardigan wearing. We’re saying ‘sod that’ and actually we’re more creative, fearless and energetic than ever!

“The show re-imagines the classic mythological quest from the point of view of an older woman. Banished from the land of the young, our protagonist must navigate this mysterious new landscape. Along the way she meets a cast of strange allies and enemies, chief among them being the ancient Seers, Jackie and Karen. Who better to help you navigate this Game of Crones? Let their wisdom guide you through the minefield of maturity and beyond!”
