Heritage Opera: La Boheme

Puccini’s ever-popular romantic drama seemed the perfect fit for the idyllic Brighton Open Air Theatre, the spring parkland reflecting the playful tone of this tale of struggling young artists in 19th century Paris. With pianist Benjamin Cox’s light melodies skipping along, our protagonists Rodolfo and Mimi (Nicholas Sales and Sarah Helsby Hughes respectively) fell in love as the show’s original humour was reflected. Standout performances came from the intense vocals of soprano Andrea Tweedale (Musette) and her lover Marcello (Mike Dewis), whose comic timing and pathos enhanced the dark narrative turn as night fell over the park and piano as one.
