The best of the rest: A great escape

BO-The-Professionals-RX1-Episode-4

Right before Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and after a delicious roast, has recently become the sweet spot to round off the weekend nicely. With all of the indulgence of an Easter egg you bought for yourself, but the discipline of finishing off a really good book, is Bake Off: The Professionals – pro patisserie and chocolate chefs sweating it out to step up to the challenges meted out by judges Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin.

With only four more episodes to go, there’s even greater reason to savour every moment. Just like it’s ‘amateur’ counterpart, this Bake Off sets challenges (croissants and Viennoiserie plus romance-themed sugar showpieces this time around), and the standard is high – but disasters happen, risks are taken in the name of pushing boundaries, and you feel for each chef team. In fact, seeing them tag up together feels that little bit more ‘Sunday’, with co-operation ruling and forgiveness at a right clanger of a mistake showing more than a touch of class. Who can forget squished roulade in the fridge or caramel-burned fingers? The show must go on, and the spirit of the Blitz (albeit at The Ritz) holds strong. With a winning smile from Liam Charles and witty epithet from Tom Allen too – they’re both sweeties and perfect Sunday evening fodder.

Lining up ducks in a row elsewhere for a different kind of tasty summer is The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, with his and co-host Angellica Bell turning their attention to the forthcoming summer holidays. It’s live, so you can even get on the old social media and ask him that tricky question about how to avoid a Big Foot in Nebraska – although he’s more likely to be able to answer tough calls on travel insurance and confusions with car hire. With attention called to these topics, as well as where to get the best holiday currency rates, you can sit back by the end and know that you’ve got Summer covered. As well as a craving for profiteroles that came from out of nowhere!

The Martin Lewis Money Show Live: Summer Special; Tuesday; ITV1, 8pm
Bake Off: The Professionals; Sunday; Channel 4, 8pm
