JUNE BROWN, 1927 – 2022
It was with great sadness that we hear of the death of June Brown. In a career as an actor that encompassed theatre, film and television she earned her reputation as a talented performer and finally the well deserved title of national treasure.
In the early 1970s she was a regular in Coronation Street but it wasn’t until 1985 when she was cast as Dot Cotton in the BBC soap Eastenders that she rose to real fame. It is in that role as the long suffering and chain smoking Dot that she will probably be best remembered.
Her acting career is only part of the woman that the country took to their hearts. June Brown was a fierce supporter and ally to the LGBTQI+ community, supporting campaigns for AIDS awareness and fighting against Clause 28.
She was a regular visitor to Brighton and particularly on the gay scene where she made many friends who will no doubt be mourning her loss right now. Reaching the age 95, she had lived a full and interesting life, a film and TV star in the old fashioned mould, a vibrant and vocal advocate of diversity and inclusivity and always a fun person to be around – she will be much missed.
June appeared on Latest TV in our early days so let’s take a look now at her being her very colourful self.
