Hamish Dustagheer (organ)

As the new Director of Music at St Bartholomew’s, Hamish Dustagheer clearly wanted to impress the Brighton and District Organist Association with his first concert. His choice of music and unmistakable talent could not fail to achieve this. With impeccable good taste he began with J.S. Bach, the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor (BWV 542). Apart from introducing us to the excellent keyboard skills and musicality of the player, this work also shows off the fine qualities of the organ.

Gabriel Pierné’s ‘Trois Pièces’ demonstrated even more virtuosity and variety of style and mood. The substantial final item, Julius Reubke’s High Romantic ‘Sonata on 94th Psalm’, a moody and thrilling work in three movements that expresses nine verses of this passionate psalm, completed the effect – a fine impression indeed! This gifted young organist is a very welcome addition to the musical life of the South Coast.
