A dance double bill from The Nightingale Theatre brings serious fun to Brighton

The Nightingale presents a double bill of musical cabaret at The Basement this November, in the shape of Body Not Fit For Purpose/A Lyrical Dance Concert.

These two shows push the boundaries of dance in a special two-part event. Opening the evening are the acclaimed Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion who present Body Not Fit For Purpose. Their first overtly political work, the piece highlights the futility of using dance to express important issues while celebrating the ‘glorious foolishness’ of trying.

Burrows and Fargion have been invited around the world with their unique brand of humour and intellectual rigour. Burrows and Fargion are currently in-house artists at the Nightingale in Brighton.

After a break with canapés and drinks, the venue will welcome A Lyrical Dance Concert from 8.30pm. Described as ‘a party in a comedy act in a cabaret show in a gig in an experimental dance performance’, the show sees the lyrics of chart hits past and present danced out by performers Gillie Kleiman and Eleanor Sikorski with joyful irreverence and serious fun.

The show insists that pop music belongs to us and can do what we want it to do. And as such, you can get your glad-rags on, grab a drink and a pal, and giggle along with this mixed-up whirlwind of glamorous divas, guitar solos and gangster rappers.

Gillie Kleiman (co-choreographer/performer) is an artist. From Gillie’s practice of dance and choreography emerge artworks presented in contexts associated with dance, theatre, live art and experimental performance.

Sara Lindström (co-choreographer/performer) is an artist from Sweden. Her artistic practice is one of dance and choreography in its broadest manifestations, from live performances to film and site-specific installation work. Her more recent work has unfolded around questions of public space and she has been commissioned to develop site-specific works in various places.

The Nightingale’s double bill, bringing these two extraordinary shows together, is guaranteed to be a chuckle-inducing and thought-provoking evening’s entertainment.
