Threadbare Theatre’s production of this Olivier award-winning comedy, Shirley Valentine, has been entertaining and enthralling audiences in Surrey and this acclaimed production is now being brought to the Marlborough Theatre, Brighton, for one week only. The production is directed by Artistic Director Lucy Linger and stars the fabulous Ruth Redman, who has recently appeared as Lady Erlynne in Lady Windermere’s Fan first at the King’s Head Theatre, London and then again at the Tabard Theatre, Chiswick.
“Ruth Redman transfixed me with her Shirley Valentine… a beautifully honest and truly inspirational monologue performed by a fantastic actress.”
Shirley Valentine is a character we can all relate to, a character who thought her life would be different. Preparing her fella’s tea, talking to the wall, she has always dreamed of travel but husband Joe “gets culture shock if we go to Chester”. Now with the offer of two weeks in Greece Shirley must decide if she can bear to miss out on an experience of a lifetime… and can you?
Previous acclaim for Threadbare Theatre Company: “A roaringly funny evening’s entertainment. Don’t miss it.” Camden New Journal. “A first class evening at the theatre.” City Islington News. “A pacy, well-spoken production.” Time Out. “A real hoot from start to finish.”’ North London Papers.
Threadbare Theatre Company have been producing theatre for over ten years in London and at Edinburgh Fringe. Over the last three years they have had huge success with their venture ‘The play at the pub’ – an up-close, cabaret style of theatre in a 16th Century Coaching Inn in Old Oxted, Surrey.

Poetry please
Entrance for Brighton & Hove Arts Council’s second Sussex Poets Competition has now closed. Clare Best, local prize-winning poet and author, university teacher and facilitator of Creative Writing and Writer in Residence at the University of Brighton is their judge and the Poetry Competition has been a great opportunity to encourage people across, or with any connection to, Sussex to flex their poetic aspirations and gain the opportunity to test their abilities through the judgement of a distinguished poet. And possibly to win a significant prize and some publicity into the bargain.
The poems are currently being read and judged by Clare Best and the winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a ceremony on 25 September. This event will take place at Brighton Unitarian Church, New Road, Brighton at 7.30 and the evening will include poetry readings by the shortlisted poets and also by judge Clare Best.
Further details of this year’s competition are available on-line, from the website www.bh-arts.org.uk/Sussex-poets-competition-2015
