Brighton’s Arty: What Katy Perry did… or inspired at least

I’m constantly amazed by the diverse sources of inspiration that provoke our Arty allies into a frenzy of creativity. Take Geoff Hands’ latest work, forBig-California-Gurl-I-2016 instance. Creating a ‘chance’ colour palette from suggestions given by friends on Facebook, he made improvised compositions that became the ‘California Gurl’ series. (These were initially explored as Katy Perry’s California Gurls hit song was playing in the background on Spotify.)
This shift in mood and subject matter shows his true commitment to explore the colourful and lyrical possibilities of abstraction. And the results create an intriguing dichotomy: between an abstraction originating in observing the visual world, complemented by pushing the boundaries of his painting.
