Brahms & Schumann Song – Robin Tritschler (tenor), Lorna Anderson (soprano) Malcolm Martineau (piano)

Malcolm Martineau’s second recital featured two of his favoured recording partners. Tritschler animated his bright tenor with kaleidoscopic coloration to depict the volatile moods of Heine’s bitterly disappointed and yet still optimistic young lover in Schumann’s Liederkreis Op.24.

Then in ‘Frauenliebe und -leben’ Lorna Anderson’s more mellow voice portrayed a skittish young girl growing to maturity and eventually a harrowing widowhood. The dramatic range of these two singers is phenomenal and this added great charm to their selection of Brahms Lieder, whether heart-breaking plaints, folk-songs or comic dialogues. When it comes to Lieder, Martineau certainly knows how to pick them!
