Andrew Kay on social ‘notworking’

For those of you who follow me on Twitter you will have noticed that my tweets are somewhat infrequent and my responses to other’s tweets even less frequent. It’s not a lack of interest but a lack of skill. Quite frankly I’m just not very good at it.

I do however like to use my full allocation of characters as often as I can, so when I do tweet I waste rather a lot of time honing them to a perfect 140 character count. Not always I admit, I sometimes simply name a venue, a drink or a dish that I am enjoying and add the location. You could see Twitter as a foodie electronic tag, marking my path of indulgence.

I’m much better at Facebook. I love playing word games with friends and family all over the world. I like to chat to my nephews in Wales and it really has been a fantastic way of getting in touch with lost friends everywhere.

What I don’t like though is using Facebook for business purposes. I do get lots of invitations and requests but as Facebook is my personal networking presence I prefer to get work related messages by the more conventional form of email or even snail mail. Call me old-fashioned, but that’s just the way it is.

In truth collating requests form all these different sources is just too complex and things get muddled or even lost. So please don’t take offence if I fail to respond on social networking sites to requests relating to work or if I fail to spot your tweet.

As we head into April I will be out and about for the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival: Spring Harvest doing my usual Live Food Show in the Corn Exchange on Good Friday and Easter Saturday; judging the Brighton Bake-off in Churchill Square and hosting the very first leg of our new International Chef Exchange programme. Tweets will be shorter and word games will be longer for the forseeable future!
