London Philharmonic Orchestra, Eugene Tzigane (conductor), Inon Barnatan (piano)

An all-Beethoven programme is the perfect way to luxuriate in the brilliance of the great melodopopulist. The LPO attacked the sharp and thunderous aspects of the strange, stabbing piece with real vigour.

Barnatan’s piano work in the Emperor Concerto meanwhile was more studious, focus and precised: occasionally glittering in a riveting overall performance.

The chamber music part of the Eroica Symphony (here played by two violins, cello and viola) was a fine, simmering intake of breath amidst the glorious tumult. And the final movement was an ethereal smesh of shimmering synchrony: a truly uplifting moment in a moving concert.
