BREMF – Plainsong to Polyphony

The spacious acoustic and mystical atmosphere of St. Bartholomew’s provided an ideal venue for this ambitious programme tracing the development of choral music from the 10th to 16th centuries. The Lacock Scholars from London and our own BREMF Consort brought commitment and musicality, although a smaller number of singers would have been more effective in the earlier music sung by the BREMF Consort. The later works culminating in the splendid 40-part ‘Spem in Alium’ by Thomas Tallis, a fine performance by the combined choirs, were particularly captivating. Some imprecision notwithstanding, this was a rewarding, if perhaps over-long, evening.
