Great Expectations

Nichola McAuliffe stars as the wonderfully gothic Miss Haversham and she really is splendid for every minute that she graces the stage. I only wish we had more of her during the considerable run time. Trying to stage a Charles Dickens novel is never an easy thing with it’s multitude of colourful characters and plethora of plot twists, but the director must be bold in striking from the script anything that is not strictly necessary. However this production sticks so faithfully to the book that there are long dull periods. More Nichola and less exposition please.
