Slow Club

With a week until Christmas, gigs booked around now can be slightly saccharine. Indeed, this mellow crowd was full of snuggling couples sharing loving glances. Maybe this was due to the annual scheduling of Fred Claus on TV, though more likely this was down to the classy soul of Sheffield’s Slow Club. Their diverse sound veered from vintage heartbroken sixties laments to folk-pop almost-hoedown, though thankfully stuck to the golden rule of never going full Mumford. An almost dreadful, though ultimately great encore of festive numbers, complete with crowd singalong and “let’s drag everyone we know on stage” moment, proved a fittingly raucous end to an occasionally too sedate affair.
