Catherine Taylor of Healys LLP on the breakdown of marriage

Till death us do part?

As matrimonial lawyers, we are being instructed by a greater number of clients who are choosing to get divorced in their 40s and beyond, with the majority of divorces occurring between those have been married for a period of between five and nine years.

Statistically, it has been shown that people are now more likely to divorce between the age of 44 and 49 than any other age group. We don’t know whether you would call this a mid-life crisis or perhaps people in their 40s are beginning to think that there is more to life and that they have not committed to a life sentence. Of course, in Victorian times, people rarely divorced, not only due to avoid social stigma, but because people had a short lifespan, often dying before they reached 40.

Divorce is, of course, a life changing experience for both parties and once matters are finalised, can give people the opportunity to rethink the direction of their lives.

“By having legal advice you will have the benefit of knowing your entitlement”

We believe it is important that divorcing couples try to get as much positivity out of their situation as possible. This is made easier if the parties’ legal advisors are able to alleviate some of the strain and minimise the acrimony between the spouses. Although choosing to use a lawyer for your divorce may seem an expensive luxury, we consider that in hindsight you will believe it to be money well spent.

By having legal advice in respect of financial issues following the breakdown of your marriage or relationship, you will have the benefit of knowing your entitlement and hopefully achieving the best results.
