CDMS Partners showcase their new loft apartments in South-East London
Brighton based Architects: CDMS Partners are designing some very interesting new loft apartments in south-east London. They will start to be built in July this year and are due to be finished in January 2015. Everyone loves high, open, bright living space, the challenge with modern housing developments is how to achieve something interesting, quirky and bold.
Chris Scarr, Director at CDMS Partners, has been faced with this challenge whilst designing a new development of 17 new loft apartments and town houses including a doctors surgery in Streatham, South London.
“New house and flat design can often suffer from low ceilings, small rooms, tiny windows, lack of garden and poor interior finishes,” says Chris.
CDMS’s scheme tackles a number of these issues head on; many of the apartments will have five-metre high rooms with clerestory rooflights, the roof space is opened up into the rooms creating a feeling of space and light. The ‘loft’ concept has been carried through all parts of the apartment design including the bedrooms and living areas.
The living space is larger and grander than your average apartment with more space to create a study or extra seating areas. Not only does this work well for the interior space but it also helps the exterior of the building come to life; these new buildings will have red brick facades with silver/grey zinc panels and roofing, expressing the interesting roof profiles and openness of the building.
The dwellings are set in a landscaped garden with existing mature elm, lime, holly and chestnut trees, and all flats have one or even two generous balconies.
The interior of each apartment has been lovingly detailed and finished with a ‘shades of grey’ colour scheme, silver oak flooring, and french grey limestone bathrooms. The kitchen is grey high gloss lacquer and each one comes with a brightly coloured Smeg fridge.
Chris explains that CDMS Partners have really enjoyed working on this project and have several new residential and house projects just starting in the studio including several one-off private houses for clients who have purchased plots of land currently occupied by run down properties or bungalows.
