Ryan runs for son and Rockinghorse
Brighton-based Rockinghorse, the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit (TMBU) is raising money for a brand new, non-surgical unit for the childrens A&E department at the Alex.
The team of Have a Heart and Rockinghorse runners included the Charity’s Chief Executive, Ryan Heal, who took part in the Brighton Half Marathon for the first time, completing the race in two hours and seven minutes. He raised £3,350, which he presented to the Rockinghorse team at a post-race reception at Gars Chinese restaurant on Prince Albert Street in Brighton.
Ryan’s passion for the cause is much more than a job – his son, John Heal, aged 6, suffers from a rare blood condition called ITP which has resulted in ongoing treatment at the Alex, as well as visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
John was diagnosed back in November 2011, and although there are no signs of imminent improvement, the Heal family take great comfort in supporting Rockinghorse together. Ryan says:
“I’ve always put my family first in all I do and this is no exception – I just happen to be Chief Exec of Rockinghorse too! I think ALL charity bosses should lead by example and take on one challenge every year. In my case it’s easy as my son is the motivation I need.”
The charity is still looking for runners to join the team and run the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 6 April. To sign-up, visit the website rockinghorse.org.uk, email enquiries@rockinghorse.org.uk or call 01273 330044.
