Latest Interiors looks at what the best dressed windows are wearing this season
The way we dress our windows – with curtains, voiles, shutters or blinds – has a real impact on the look and feel of surrounding space. Curtains and blinds give a finishing touch to a rooms’ style and character.
Different fabrics and styles can add light, space, warmth or even a touch of drama to a room. This week, Latest Interiors looks through some beautiful windows.
It’s a draw
Patterns and prints are the key trend on catwalks, clothes and also at home this season. Dots, florals, birds and other animals are bringing a bit of colour and life back to textiles. Curtains are a clever way to introduce pattern, without going overboard – keep the theme by picking out key colours in cushions or throws, without over-using the pattern. Tribal prints are another big trend. Full length voile panels provide daytime privacy, giving space a soft, romantic feel.
Curtains help to keep light out, and heat in – so with the coming warmer months in mind, opt for lighter weight fabrics. You can always swap them for heavier fabrics: a rich velvet is perfect for winter, and the change will give your room an instant makeover. If you have the budget, go bespoke for a custom made fit, unless your windows are ‘standard’ sizes in which case you might find the perfect pair on the high street. To make a feature of a large or unusual window, use colour and textured fabric to highlight it.
Beautiful blinds
Practical, modern and chic, blinds work with most windows. Their economical design makes them an ideal choice for smaller spaces and contemporary homes. They’re also useful for awkward spaces, like large or square bays, or Velux windows.
Roller blinds are very space efficient, and give a clean, modern look. For bedrooms (especially children’s rooms) black-out roller blinds can be a godsend. Semi-opaque, textured blinds work like voiles or nets and allow some light in while maintaining privacy – and they look great. Venetian (slatted) blinds are versatile enough for multi-purpose spaces, studies and studios. Neutral colours will blend in to other décor, allowing you to make a feature elsewhere in the room. Alternatively, use blinds to introduce a bold colour block or texture into your space.
