Comedy: Sunshine Funshine

Summer’s here and it’s time to throw your head back and laugh it up

Just because the sun is out and the beach is beckoning, it doesn’t mean that making the most of the summer should mean missing out on some fabulous comedy club nights around town.
The weekend erupts on a regular basis over at Komedia, with Krater kicking off at 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, pitching up as the perfect place to relay that holiday feeling from the sun, sea and stones that occupy the daytime. This weekend sees Marcel Lucont headline proceedings, aka Alexis Dubus’ Gallic alter-ego, bringing pomposity, arrogance and a swarthy je ne sais quoi from across The Channel. You could be on holiday already.

On Sunday, after spending the day sunning outside our testament to jolly royal weekends away, step inside the Brighton Dome complex itself and keep the good mood going with Katherine Ryan’s touring show, ‘Glam Role Model’. Regularly seen all over our TV screens, with her bitingly funny wit and observations, it’s good to sail close to the wind with this comedic talent from Canada. Frequently saying the things that have brought her publicised death threats and a killer comedy career, the Corn Exchange should be packed come night-time.

And if you’re in the centre of town on Friday night, starting your weekend off with a bang and a pint, rushing to see the waves after a week’s work, then simply pootle on up to the Quadrant pub at 8pm to see the first in a series of Edinburgh previews from award-winning sketch group Casual Violence’s founder James Hamilton. Playing every fortnight throughout June and July, and joined each time by another sketch comic’s preview, these are works in progress but from minds that have been working in comedy for years. This opening night of the fitful of the ‘James Hamilton Is So Lonely’ run sees Hamilton joined by the marvellously funny Anna Morris. It’s also free.
So sun and smile and roar with laughter this Summer. It’s that easy.
