Stage: Empirical Emporium

New season of top entertainment from Brighton’s impressive new theatre

Emporium may be amongst the new kids on the block but so far they have been a theatrical force to be reckoned with. Already clocking up a stunning record of top reviews for their own and co-produced output they are now planning well into the future and have announced a solid programmes for both kids and adults alike.
This autumn my top picks are the following:

Dial ‘M’ for Murder
Co produced by Talking Scarlet and Emporium….
Tony Wendice has married his wife, Margot, for her money and now plans to murder her for the same reason. He arranges the perfect murder. He blackmails a scoundrel he used to know into strangling her for a fee of one thousand pounds, and arranges a brilliant alibi for himself. This taught thriller from Frederick Knott was also made into a classic movie by none other than Alfred HItchcock. This exciting melodrama has had a highly successful run on Broadway and on tour with great reviews. “…original and remarkably good theatre – quiet in style but tingling with excitement underneath.” – NY Times.
“It’s a holiday for the whodunit fans, and, as such, it couldn’t be more welcome.” – NY Herald – Tribune.
Talking Scarlet presented What The Butler Saw at Emporium in April starring Brian Capron and Jenny Funnell, receiving outstanding reviews. The company are currently touring Stone Cold Murder, The End of The Affair and Sherlock Holmes and The Ripper Murders.

May-We-Go-Round?

Uncompromising yet utterly accessible, May-we-go-round? is a collision of fiercely energetic dance & comedic theatre taking audiences on the bittersweet ride of romance.
A provocative, playful and gritty insight into our romantic disillusionment; it swings wildly between hilarious truths and intimate vulnerability. Chess recently discovered her diary from the age of 10, devoted entirely to the detailed records of her many loves. Years later, the ones we lust after still take a disproportionately large chunk of our talking time and mental space (even if we don’t like to admit it!). We find ourselves on the jangly merry go round of romance. We are enthralled by romantic experiences yet flummoxed and irritated by the whole charade. Are we enjoying it? Yes. Does it make sense? No. But, round and round we go…’.11751747_947829485259932_1504841559682535606_n
May-We-Go-Round? is the company’s first work, and was supported by Arts Council England and South East Dance. After winning the The Pebble Trust Brighton Fringe Award in December, they completed a five-night sell out at Emporium Theatre as part of Brighton Fringe. They were shortlisted for the Audience Choice Award and won the Fringe Review Award for Outstanding Theatre and South East Dance’s Space to Dance Award.
