The Last Resort
I wanted to love this, I threw myself into it and tried, but to no avail. It simply did not meet my expectations. Perhaps this is because we have experienced so much amazing immersive theatre in the Brighton Festival over the last decade. The concept is promising, the scripted soundscape works well enough but the delivery is weak, yellow flags and picture cards do not a performance make and it was down to me to provide the balance in my head. Fair enough if one is given at least some help, but a near empty beach, a few very ordinary props and a trail of numbered yellow flags was not help enough. Add to this the less than convincing team presenting the work, no costumes and no sense of theatre or commitment either. Perhaps it has to be seen as a work in progress and maybe with more work the decent Philip K Dick-esque concept will make more sense. But for now this piece needs both effort and money thrown at it.
