Andy Garth: Now & Then
Auction… again already
As you have hopefully read before in this column, every two months, with my great friend Robert Jeeves (THE postcard man) of Step Back In Time in Queens Road, we hold an auction of anything and everything to do with Brighton, Hove and Sussex. The next auction is Tuesday 27 September, 7pm (viewing) for an 8pm start at the Aldrington Church Hall, Glebe Villas, just off New Church Road Hove.
There are over 220 lots with a variety of items including postcards, photos, books, theatre programmes and all sorts of ephemera.
The photo to the right is a very rare postcard of Giggins the Bakers at their Brighton branch in the 1920s at 30 Gloucester Road, and is on the corner of Upper Gardner Street.
It’s always good to get a North Laine shop scene as they are unusual and should attract lots of bids with a guide price of approx £30… but who knows?
The photo at the top of the column is a lot that I was asked to sell as a direct result of one of my previous columns’ photo of the Brighthelmston Dispensary in Queens Road, which was demolished in the early 1970s.
It is the original brass plaque that appeared on the front entrance of the building and weighs a ton, but is a one-off original, a piece of local history unseen for years and forgotten about. I am expecting in excess of £150 as there is not another one that I know of in existence.
Now I must say that the prices for items in the sale start from as little as £2 so if you would like a copy of the catalogue email me and I will send you a copy.
Also if you think you have something unique for an auction please let me know as its great fun to see new and unusual items.
