Oh What A Lovely War
Tackling Joan Littlewood’s modern day classic is no easy task, harder still when you’re an all male cast of five covering the orchestral pieces too. In some ways Blackeyed Theatre cleverly got around this, in others the lack of a feminine voice was to the detriment of the piece by losing poignancy and the lack of actors in some scenes reduced the impact of the story. The play itself was a scathing attack on the heartbreaking futility of WWI through small scenes and song. The actor’s multi-tasking was commendable and they were clearly talented. High energy, thought-provoking and courageously performed.
