Swan Lake – Russian State Ballet & Opera Theatre of Astrakhan

Tchaikovsky’s glorious tunes, ever yearning or bright with brass and then even sadder with the keening oboe, were very well served by the orchestra. This company of young dancers matched that high quality of traditional production values.

While all the showpiece dancing in the Prince’s court was certainly impressive, the real stars of this show are the swans, in thrilling formation, mute witnesses of the tragic love scenes. The dramatic atmosphere was enhanced by excellent design and careful lighting with even a few wisps of smoke. Anyone entering this world of make-believe for the first time would be enchanted.
