Brighton Festival – Mulatu Astatke
Mulatu Astatke, the creator of Ethio-jazz, put on a wonderfully raucous show with an ensemble of talented musicians. The night started well with a Duke Ellington piece that featured a dynamic saxophone solo that drew rapturous applause. Both the trumpet and saxophone communicated intricately, significantly contributing to a spectacular huge sound. The whole band (also including keyboard, cello, vibraphone, bongos, double bass and drums) was tight and was brilliantly led by Mulatu, whose considered playing left space for them to dazzle the audience musically, whilst also visibly enjoying themselves. This sense of joy was infectious, creating a tangibly vibrant atmosphere. Magnificent.
