Missing Brighton killer hands himself in

A mentally ill killer from Brighton who went missing this week has handed himself in to a police station in Manchester.

Steven Dunne, 42, who lived at Chates Farm Road, in the Hanover area of Brighton, went to Bootle Street Police Station in the centre of Manchester this morning (Saturday 1 October).

Sussex Police said that Dunne was due to be returned to hospital today and would now be subject to a higher level of security.

He was reported missing after failing to return to Southview Low Secure Unit in Hellingly, near Hailsham, on Wednesday (28 September).

Lisa Rodrigues, chief executive of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We were concerned for Mr Dunne’s welfare and we worked closely with Sussex Police throughout their investigation.

“Mr Dunne recognised that he needed help and that’s why he came forward to police in Manchester.

“I would like to extend my personal thanks to the public for their understanding and their strong support.”

Detective Inspector Miles Ockwell, who led the police investigation, said: “We are pleased that Steven has been found.

“Steven entered Bootle Street station in the centre of Manchester to hand himself in.

“I want to thank the media, the public and Greater Manchester Police for supporting us in our attempt to find Steven.”

Dunne was receiving hospital treatment after being convicted of manslaughter by diminished responsibility and ordered by the court to be detained under the Mental Health Act.

He stabbed Gordon Stalker to death at the door of his home in Elm Grove, Brighton.
