Four more electric car charging points fitted in Brighton

Another four electric vehicle charging points have been installed in Brighton.

The new points in Madeira Drive and at the Withdean Stadium bring the total number of on-street points installed in the city by Brighton and Hove City Council to eight.

The aim is to make it easy and straightforward for electric car drivers to top up their vehicles while visiting the city.

The council also wants local residents and businesses to use them while they are out and about.

The existing charging points are at Bartholomews in central Brighton and in Ditchling Road, opposite The Level.

Electric car drivers from anywhere in the country can register with the council free of charge to use the charging points.

Parking at the charging point, while the vehicle is being charged, and electricity used to charge the car are both free for a trial period.

Councillor Ian Davey, the council’s cabinet member for transport and the public realm, said: “There is growing interest in electric vehicles and we are leading the way in providing on-street charging points so that people can visit the city, knowing they can charge up their vehicle while they are here.”

The charging points provide a top-up charge and have a maximum permitted stay of three hours.

Elektromotive, the Falmer company which helped the council develop the charging points, will administer the scheme which is part-funded by the European Union.

The council won £2.2 million to invest in small-scale transport projects from the EU.

It said that Brighton and Hove was the only city in the country to win European money from the Civitas Archimedes Project for such schemes.

Council officers are working with five other cities in Europe to share best practice, experience and skills.
