A nice sit down…
Latest Interiors discuss options upon which to rest your weary rump
The festive season is almost upon us. As winter tightens its grip, as a nation we descend, Royle-family style, onto our respective sofas and armchairs for the traditional winter hibernation in front of the TV. Are you sitting comfortably? If not, there’s still plenty of time before Christmas arrives to make sure you have a nice sit down.

Old favourites
Traditional designs like Chesterfield sofas and other period styles are perfect for winter warming: beaten-up leather, chintz, faded velvet, or vintage Liberty prints add character to an eclectic room and give a homey feel – a bit like slipping into your most comfortable old socks and slippers.
Classic chairs by Lloyd Loom (lovely rattan chairs, perfect for conservatories and bedrooms), wingback-style armchairs in heavy velvet or aged (leather, or even an antique Victorian nursing chair (made for nursing babies in, they needed to be comfortable) are all comfortable and charming.
Modern manners
For a more contemporary look, opt for low-level sofas and clean, simple lines, in neutrals, monochrome or bright colour blocks. These styles work best in simple, quality fabrics with texture: think tweed, linen, suede and wool. If you’re after a softer look, break up harsh lines with sumptuous cushions and throws. Modular corner units are perfect for large, open-plan spaces, allowing you to custom-build your own sofa, complete with hidden under-seat storage and fold-out bed.
There are some fabulous modern classic chairs, too. Designs by Charles Eames, Le Corbusier, Fritz Hansen and of course the eponymous Barcelona chair (Mies van der Rohe). Splash out on an original if you can, but if you’re on a budget the high street has plenty of designer-inspired options – if not fit for a king, then surely fit for a Royle.
