Traffic police crack down in Brighton and Hove

Traffic police have been busy in Brighton and Hove over the past few weeks.

Officers on motorbikes were stopping people on Brighton seafront yesterday (Tuesday 31 January).

And a few weeks ago Sussex Police said that 38 drivers were stopped in Hove in just two hours either for using a mobile phone while driving or for not wearing a seatbelt.

They were stopped as part of a joint road safety awareness campaign also involving Brighton and Hove City Council and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Sergeant Chris Durrant, from the neighbourhood policing team, said: “The operation was aimed at educating drivers using mobile phones and both drivers and passengers found not wearing seatbelts.

“Each offender is given the option of an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice or to take time out to view a fire service presentation demonstrating the potential consequences of their offences.”

He said that four tickets were issued to drivers and added that those who opted for the fire service presentation heard fire officers offer their own personal experiences to highlight the relevant dangers.

The drivers were all stopped in Old Shoreham Road near Hove Fire Station in English Close on Thursday 12 January.
