Martha Reeves

It was the fourth Concorde visit for the soul survivor and the crowd were already singing before Martha began a set of mixed blessings. Despite recent concerns over the quality of her voice, she proved that she can still cut it; with her lower range sounding more funky Stax than poppy Motown. All the hits were there but my favourite ‘My Baby Loves Me’ was cheapened by a cheesy ‘dancer’ fan being invited on stage. Some of the crowd chatted over the ballads, and some questionable covers didn’t help but you can’t deny the staying power of the classics and this living legend.
