The Floating Palace
You can’t deny the appeal of watching psych-pop eccentric Robyn Hitchcock spur folk royalty Martin and Eliza Carthy, Brit-winner KT Tunstall and Arizonian alt.country dude Howe Gelb through lines like ‘Even Marilyn Monroe was a man/But this tends to get overlooked/By our mother-fixated, overweight, sexist media…’ Or hearing Gelb growl ‘take it Mart!’ during a dusty duet while he threw the grand piano’s tone with blocks; witnessing Tunstall shrug off the packaging; and hearing Krystle Warren’s melancholy-and-molasses voice on just about anything. But this end of year revue-styled roots ‘jam’ inevitably suffered from the touring structure, big stage and curfew.
