Mother’s Day treats at Enzo Hair & Beauty in Kemp Town

- March 6, 2012

Zara Baker visits Enzo Hair & Beauty to find out about the benefits of a Dermalogica facial for Mum this Mother’s Day or an indulgent treat for yourself

It’s great to take some time out once in a while – and pretty essential for our wellbeing too. This Mother’s Day, a facial at Enzo Hair & Beauty in Kemp Town will go down a treat. It’s the perfect gift and if you have the time – it’s a great treatment to take advantage of yourself too. At Enzo, a range of treatments are on offer, from facials and waxing to Jessica Manicures and massage. I was in Kemp Town to find out more about world-renowned skincare brand Dermalogica and the Dermalogica facials offered by Chantelle and the experienced beauty team at Enzo.

I quickly learn that a Dermalogica facial is unlike any facial I’ve had in the past. The elements are all there: essential products, soothing music, a neck and shoulder massage and positively glowing results. The difference is in the science behind the brand.

Dermalogica was founded in 1986 by British born Jane Wurwand (the brand may be known as American but it was a Brit who pioneered it!). Married to a salesman who sold cosmetic products, Jane realised that people would buy the products if they understood why they were beneficial for their skin. The International Dermal Institute was launched, training people on the science behind the beauty. Dermalogica branded products quickly followed as the need for straightforward skin-care products – complete with simple packaging and soap-free cleansers – became apparent. Knowing what products to use on our skin can still be difficult, which is where the Dermalogica facial comes in…

Face mapping
Treatment begins with a Dermalogica face mapping consultation. A diagram shows the face split into 14 sections. Each zone on the face is analysed by Chantelle at Enzo. Dehydration, pigmentation, fine lines, sensitivity, breakout activity and more are identified. A personalised treatment plan is then made that can include products from Dermalogica’s AGE Smart range (to beat signs of ageing), mediBac clearing (for acne prone skin) and ChromaWhite TRx range (to treat uneven skin tone).

During the treatment, Chantelle talks through the products she is using. There is the option to simply unwind and switch off, as a personalised prescription of products is run through by Chantelle after the treatment. Soothing music lets me escape from life’s daily stresses. Not only is a facial beneficial to my skin, but my wellbeing too, giving me a chance to switch off and relax. Outside, the wind is howling and the rain is falling down, but I am in a relaxing oasis – for 90 minutes at least.

Chantelle is professional and friendly, instantly putting me at ease. Products are described as they are applied, and I learn why they are used for my skin type. One product I find surprising for my combination skin is the application of oil after a double cleanse. ‘Use oil to treat oil’ is a new mantra in my beauty routine (but not daily!) as although skin can become oily – read shiny – quickly, it also gets dehydrated around the eyes and nose. Stripped back, cleansed, exfoliated and moisturised, the Dermalogica facial leaves skin healthy and nourished and this is the perfect base to work with.

A neck and shoulder massage aids relaxation during my treatment, so not only is my face left glowing, but my skin is soft with the products applied and my shoulders – so often tensed by carrying bags of shopping and sitting hunched over my desk – finally have the kinks ironed out and I fully relax. I can’t wait to try other treatments on Enzo’s extensive therapy list. A facial is recommended every four to eight weeks, and upkeep with use of the correct products at home is extremely beneficial. Your skin will thank you for it.
