The Wellsbourne Society

Dr David Bramwell and Prof Matthew Clayton’s Wellsbourne Society is a new local interest group that combines history and psychogeography to unearth Brighton’s hidden tales. To a live soundtrack by musician Richard Norris, Clayton and Bramwell bookended this launch evening with imaginative stories of the city’s long-buried Wellsbourne River. A chance to see legendary theatre critic Jack Tinker’s poignant BBC documentary ‘All Change for Brighton’ was worth the admission alone, but it was affectionately matched by historian Peter Chrisp’s photos of the down at heel, 1980s town. Each lost shopfront and pub elicited cheers of recognition from the crowd.
