Scrublands

Despite showing plenty of promise, this production failed to live up to expectations. Whilst successfully creating a chilling atmosphere through the clever use of lighting and an exquisite live string quartet in the cells deep below the Town Hall, the play itself failed to capitalise on these strong foundations. The director failed to make use of the unique space provided, meaning large parts of the performance were inaccessible or obstructed from view as a result. The piece also lacked any variety or change in pace, leading to it becoming bogged down in the wordy, abstract and hard to follow narrative of the main protagonist. Good ideas, disappointingly executed.
