Review: Heavenly Harps, Andrew Ballantyne & Magdalena Reising
One harp sounds very clear in St Mary’s, which has such a fine acoustic, but two harps sound wonderful! Early music, romantic transcriptions and traditional Scottish ballads all flowed easily to the ear, disguising the complexity and musical virtuosity of the playing in intricate counterpoint, with some very satisfying dynamic and rhythmic contrasts.
Highlights were the ‘Nocturne’ by Glinka and Magdalena’s hauntingly beautiful composition in memory of a friend ‘Just Passing Through’.
Hurry along at 6pm, after work or a heavy day, and go with high expectations. There are still two more performances and this is a real treat.
