Police drop case against Brighton murder suspect

A Brighton man arrested on suspicion of murdering Jeffery Burrows last month has been told that he faces no further action.

The 21-year-old man was the first person to be arrested after Mr Burrows was stabbed to death at his home in Norfolk Square, Brighton.

He answered bail yesterday (Tuesday 29 May) and was told by Sussex Police that he was no longer a suspect. His bail was cancelled.

The 21-year-old was arrested on Monday 30 April, the day after Mr Burrows – also known as Jeff, Humphrey or Big Humph – died.

Officers have since arrested two other suspects and charged them with murdering Mr Burrows.

Joel Elliott, 22, of North Road, Brighton, and Adam White, 22, of Bedford Place, Liverpool, have also been brought before Brighton magistrates.

They were remanded in custody for a plea and case management hearing at Lewes Crown Court on Friday 6 July.

Mr Burrows, who grew up in Dungannon in Northern Ireland, was widowed earlier this year when his wife Brione died.

On Sunday 29 April emergency services were called to his flat in Norfolk Square at about 7.40pm.

Paramedics spent more than hour there trying to save him but he was pronounced dead shortly after 9pm.

Post-mortem tests were carried out the next day (Monday 30 April) and concluded that he died of stab wounds.
